The world’s first ride-on mower with remote control offers even more safety and convenience in difficult terrain

The world’s first ride-on mower with remote control, the AS 940 Sherpa 4WD RC can be operated comfortably both from the driver seat and via a professional remote control unit with a high range. Equipped with a professional Briggs & Stratton Series 8 engine and hydrostatic transmission, the AS 940 Sherpa 4WD RC is designed to perform on slopes.
It is recommended to operate the machine from the driver seat for high area performance and optimal operator comfort on flat terrain. Remote-controlled operation is recommended for increased operator safety on slopes and inclines up to 33 degrees. The operator is also shielded from exhaust, noise, vibration, dust, pollen, insects and scrub. The following functions of the machine can be operated by remote control: start and stop, to drive forward, backwards and stop, cutting height adjustment, blade clutch, differential lock, steering trim and reverse. When the machine is operated from the driver seat, the remote control functions as a dashboard. The control levers of the remote control are progressive: the more the control lever is pressed, the higher the speed or the steering angle. When the control levers are released, the parking brake automatically engages and the steering moves into the middle position. Only a short training phase is needed to control the machine safely and precisely.

Fatigue-free work in ride-on mode

With a highly stable tubular frame, the AS 940 Sherpa 4WD RC performs even under harsh conditions. Operators up to 2 meters tall can operate the machine comfortably thanks to a length-adjustable seat and seat spring package. A low centre of gravity, folding bar and branch deflectors are added safety features, while lashing points integrated in the frame enable secure transport.

Closed surfing mower deck

Like the other Sherpa models, the AS 940 Sherpa 4WD RC’s cross-blade system delivers impressive mulching results in grass and dense growth. Bearing-supported blades cut the grass while a mulching blade positioned above them shreds the cuttings, which are then deposited between the wheels for added safety on slopes and wet grass. The mower deck’s surfing suspension yields upwards to obstacles, protecting the blades and turf from damage. Cutting heights can be adjusted to 5 levels from 80–135 cm via the remote control, whether in ride-on mode or operating from a distance.

Expert opinion: “Mowing on slopes or roadsides involve risks. Vibration and exhaust are detrimental to health and given new alternatives, it may possibly no longer be an acceptable risk to allow public works employees to operate traditional mowers in these circumstances” (Hendrik Rößmann, technical instructor at DEULA Westfalen-Lippe GmbH, KommunalTechnik, Issue 1, Jan / Feb 2018)

The all-wheel drive ride-on mowers from AS Motor in a new design

The 2023 all-wheel drive models of the AS Motor 940 Sherpa family will appear in new splendour in the future. With new paintwork, an additional front panel and the newly designed decals, the Sherpa’s are even more attractive. But the 2023 model year of the AS 4WD Sherpa family also offers some technical innovations.

The new ATV tyres on the AS 940 Sherpa XL and the remote-controlled ride-on mower AS 940 Sherpa RC feature even better performance when driving across slopes and better climbing ability. In future, all AS Motor 4WD Sherpa models will be equipped with the AS tyre sealant Plattfuss-Stop as standard – downtimes due to flat tyres will be a thing of the past. The new fuel tank of the Sherpas offers more volume (17 litres), a larger tank opening, a fuel level indicator and a closed circuit with less fuel evaporation. The new locking mechanism of the foldable bar ensures easier handling and improved freedom of movement when operating the driving lever. In future, the protective cloth between the engine and the seat will no longer be elaborately riveted, but locked in place by robust magnets. Accessibility to the engine, for example when adjusting the valves or changing the oil, is significantly improved. This was an idea from AS-Motor users and dealers. Many thanks for this practical improvement idea.

Steffen Rief (maintenance employee – Wört municipality, Germany)

With the Sherpa RC not only can you do excellent work, it is also fun! Changeover from manual to remote-controlled operation is just a simple hand motion and done in no time at all. And there are actually situations where manual operation makes more sense. For example, if you must mow a larger area, you are certainly faster when seated on the mower.

featured-image

Manfred Hopfensitz (Manager of municipality of Wört, Germany)

The Sherpa is lightweight and has great off-road mobility. If I get stuck with the mower in a really wet spot, I lock the differential and maneuver out without any trouble. Moreover, the agricultural tyres guarantee grip on wet terrain.

Our AS 940 Sherpa 4WD RC always inspires us! Thanks to the remote control, it can work in areas where no machine operation would otherwise be possible. Even in rough terrain, the machine can be controlled precisely via the remote control and leaves a sensational cutting pattern even in heavy overgrowth. Our customers are also thrilled!

– Michael Breden (Grünwert Bremen GmbH, Germany)

We use the AS 940 Sherpa RC to maintain areas that are difficult to access. We are thrilled every time with the slope capability and the easy control.

MSC Gaildorf owns a 940 Sherpa and an AS 26 2-stroke 3-wheel mower for the maintenance of the motocross sports facility. The track goes up and down - with various steep slopes. For high area output on slopes, the Sherpa is just perfect - while the AS 26 2T excels on extreme slopes of the jump hills. These two machines also form the basis for our international events. We are happy to use rental equipment from AS-Motor for our large events in order to prepare the entire event area optimally within a very short time. We have had very positive experiences with the high-end machines 1040 YAK and 940 Sherpa RC from AS-Motor. Real professional machines for the most difficult areas and conditions.

– Sven Wolpert (Sports Director at MSC Gaildorf e.V. - the organiser of international motocross races, Germany)

The AS 940 SHERPA 4WD RC is a great helper when mowing tall grass. It works very well in steep terrain, and the best part is that it can also be controlled by remote control.

– Miroslav Šesták (Mechanic & Craftsman of Bratislava Capital, Slovakia)

Sherpa is absolutely superior to ordinary ride-on mowers due to its low centre of gravity and excellent traction. The AS Sherpa 940 4WD RC closes the gap between an ordinary ride-on mower with four-wheel drive and a caterpillar mower, as it manages slopes that are no longer passable with a ride-on mower, but it also does not tear up the turf on wet green areas when manoeuvring and turning. This is a big advantage in the municipal sector, where we use the Sherpa to mow slopes in towns and on sports fields that should not look like a farmland after mowing.

– Günther Wünsch (Owner Wünsch Forestry Services, Germany)

For me as a service provider, the AS Sherpa 940 4WD RC is the ideal machine to be able to flexibly and economically carry out a wide range of mowing work for my customers. On the one hand, it is easy to mow lawns that require a well-maintained mowing pattern, and on the other hand, tall grass and undergrowth such as blackberries can be mulched quickly and effectively. We use the mower 50% in ride-on mode and 50% in RC mode. In RC mode, it pleases with its precise handling and in narrow areas with its sensitive response to the control commands via the professional radio control.

– Günther Wünsch (Owner Wünsch Forestry Services, Germany)

Use in orchard meadows is also an area where the AS mower can show off its advantages such as manoeuvrability and low overall height. When a tractor with a mulcher can no longer be used due to low branches, the Sherpa 940 4WD RC can easily drive under low-hanging branches without damaging or tearing off branches. Should the situation require it, it is very easy to switch the AS Sherpa 4WD RC to radio operation and carry out dangerous or dusty mowing runs with maximum safety for the equipment operator. Just fold down the safety bar, switch to RC operation and off you go.

We at Stadtwerke Sehnde GmbH have been using the AS 940 Sherpa 4WD RC for over 600 operating hours in our maintenance work – and we’re still impressed. The machine is efficient, fast, and reliable, even under challenging conditions. Thanks to its tight turning radius and high ground clearance, we can easily access difficult areas such as basins, ditches, and slopes. The remote control makes mowing on inclines safe and precise for the operator, reducing any risk to a minimum. The Sherpa stands out for its stability, traction, and durability – qualities that make a real difference in daily use.

The AS 940 Sherpa 4WD RC is the ideal machine for dense scrub and steep terrain. In remote control mode, the Sherpa really shows its strength. I can operate it from a safe distance, staying well out of the danger zone, while the mower powers through tough, overgrown vegetation without hesitation. Its strong traction, low centre of gravity, and solid construction ensure maximum stability and control, even on challenging slopes. In my daily work, one thing matters most: safety without compromise on performance – and that’s exactly what the AS 940 Sherpa 4WD RC delivers.

‘Not only is the Sherpa RC great to work with, it's also fun! [On switching from manual to remote control:] It's a simple operation and done in no time. Yes, and there are actually situations where manual operation makes more sense. For example, if you have a larger area to mow, you'll definitely be faster if you sit on it.’

‘The Sherpa is light and very capable off-road. If I get stuck with the mower in a very wet spot, I simply engage the differential lock and then get out again without any problems. The agricultural tyres also ensure that the tread does not get clogged up in wet terrain.’
